My first attempt to use Wordpress for my website

My dad was born before WW2 and remembers an old windmill near to where he now lives in Seaford, East Sussex. He used to pass by when rabbiting and mushrooming for the Canadian Officers billeted nearby.  Did a bit of research over Christmas and put the result into a web site for the family and locals living nearby to check out.

Didn’t bother with a full domain; if you use dyndns.com for updating a web presence to match your changing home IP address, you can add temporary sites there. Sites end up with a small advertising header; seems a small price to pay for free temporary domains!!

FreeNAS & Wordpress

Posted by admin under IT Support

Managed to get Wordpress running on my local FreeNAS box and then point to it from my main web address. My iSP doesn’t support php and I didn’t want to pay for a server where the web domain is hosted, so it seemed like the best option!

Some good links for anyone trying the same process…

To get MySQL and a fuller phpMyAdmin running on FreeNAS see
http://www.howtoforge.com/installing-mysql-and-phpmyadmin-on-freenas

Once that is in place, download the latest Wordpress from http://wordpress.org/download, unzip and install onto your web server using the instructions at
http://codex.wordpress.org/Installing_WordPress. In step2, use the phpMyAdmin method to create the initial database and user.

That’s it!!!
